Alison Francis has been weaving for over 30 years, first as a hobby weaver and then, after completing her Bachelor of Design at Unitec in Auckland, working full time in her studio. She is totally passionate about weaving and considers any day that has weaving in it, is a good day.

She is constantly exploring new weave structures and techniques to use in her work and particularly enjoys the challenge of working with fine yarns to create sophisticated fabrics.

No matter what she is weaving, it is important that it is not only of sound construction, but also a unique piece of design. This individuality is often achieved with hand-dyed yarns, and also with images using cyanotype photographic prints applied to the handwoven fabrics. It is this challenge that keeps her coming back to her loom day after day.

Her work can be found in private and public collections.  Alison’s most recent public work was created for the New Library in Birkenhead, on Auckland’s North Shore, in 2011.
